Q: What is Workers Compensation Insurance?
A: Workers comp is insurance to protect you from any injuries that can happen to a worker on your property while work is being performed. If a company doesn’t have this insurance and someone gets injured, you could be held responsible for the injuries to that worker. While some roofing companies don’t carry this type of insurance, we at Bill West Roofing are glad to take responsibility for our safety procedures and for our workers.

Q: Do you need to get inside of the house?
A: Under normal circumstances we do not need to get inside of the house. Unless the estimate is for a roof leak. Then we will need to get inside to see where the stain is located.
Q: Do you need to get into the attic for a roof leak?
A: 95% of the time we can get our measurements and find the problem on the roof.
Q: What is an ice dam?
A: Ice dams are a common problem in the Kansas City area. Ice dams occur when snow melts near the ridgelines of warm roofs (roofs without adequate ventilation). As the water runs down the roof to the overhang, it cools and freezes. If the snow continues, this melt and freeze process continues and an ice dam can form. The water can seep under the shingles, through the decking, and into the house. This, of course, can cause serious roof leaks, even in freezing temperatures. For an illustration please click here.
The best prevention for ice dams is a well-ventilated (cool) roof. Additional protection for your roof can be applied with an impermeable ice and water membrane. The membrane is installed on top of the decking, under the roofing material.
Q: Do you provide any services besides roofing?
A: No, Bill West Roofing is a roofing company. We specialize in roofing and pride ourselves on being the best of the best. If other work is needed we can offer advice on reputable companies that we have worked with before. We have a number of companies that we recommend for other services; just ask us and we will be happy to help.
Q: My roof leaks. Do I need to have it totally replaced?
A: Not necessarily. Leaking can result because some flashings have come loose or because a section of the roof has been damaged. A roof failure, however, is generally irreversible and results from improper installation or choice of materials, or from the installation of a roof system inappropriate to the building.
Q: How can a homeowner recognize when a roof has problems?
A: All too often, roof problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Periodic (twice-a-year) inspections can often uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles, loose seams and deteriorated flashings, excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts, and other visible signs of roof problems. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored plasterboard, and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.
Q: When do you start?
A: About a week or so before we start your roof we will contact you to confirm your address and color of roof and where to place dumpster or truck or trailer for any waste removal.
Q: Do I need to be home when the work is being performed on my home?
A: No. You do not need to be home while the work is being performed but it is important that we are able to contact you by phone if we have any questions.
Q: Do I need to take time off of work while work is being performed on my home?
A: We do not recommend taking time off of work. Our schedules sometimes change at the last minute due to weather conditions, changes in scope of work, material availability etc.
Q: Do you need to get inside of the house?
A: Under normal circumstances, we do not need to get inside of the house.
Q: What do you need access to when you are working on my house?
A: We need access to a standard 120V electrical outlet and water. On older homes we like to have access to the circuit breaker just in case a fuse gets tripped while we are running our equipment.
Q: How will you protect my landscaping?
A: We assess your home’s specific needs and use plywood, tarps, and other appropriate materials to keep your property safe.
Q: What kind of clean-up will I have to do?
A: Bill West Roofing cleans up every day, with a complete final clean up at the end of the job. You will have no clean-up to do.
Q: How long can I expect my new roof to last?
A: The condition and lifespan of your roof, in the Kansas City area, will depend on the type of roofing material you have, the effects of your local environment and the roofing maintenance which the roof has received. According to the American Society of Home Inspectors, asphalt roofing shingles generally last 20-50 years; wood shingle/shakes, 10-40 years; clay/concrete tiles, 40+ years; slate, 30-100 years; metal roofing, 15 -40+ years. Roofing product manufacturers offer a variety of warranties on their products. Take a close look at those warranties to see what responsibilities and financial obligations they will assume if their products fail to reach their expected lifetimes.
Q: What happens if you find dry rot on my job?
A: If rotted or damaged wood is found on your house it will be removed so the extent of the damage is revealed and then an assessment by the job foreman will estimate how much of what kind of wood and how long it will take to perform the repairs. You will be contacted by a representative on the estimated costs associated with the repairs and a change order to the original contract will be created. No work will be performed without your approval.
Q: How do I pay you?
A: We will send you a bill and your warranty information to you in the mail. We won’t be there after job is completed asking for payment.
