Your roof is an investment and we here at Bill West Roofing want to make sure you have the information you need before choosing the materials that will protect your Kansas City home or commercial property. Not only is it important that your roof look good and compliment the architectural style of your building, but even more important is how well it will protect you and your possessions from whatever Mother Nature throws at it.
Different Types of Shingles:
All shingles are not created equal. Here are some of the different styles and the characteristics that set them apart.
- 3-Tab Shingles
- Architectural Shingles
- Asphalt Designer Shingles
3-Tab Shingles
The most basic shingle available at your local lumber yard is the 3-tab shingle. Typically this is a flat, 2-dimensional mat core of fiberglass, coated with a single layer of asphalt and covered in ceramic granules. This creates different color blends. While providing adequate coverage, 3-Tab shingles only have a 2-dimensional look, while the architectural shingles are 3-dimensional.
Architectural Shingles
While heavier than traditional 3-Tab shingles, the roofing materials in Architectural Shingles do not need added roof support. The core of an Architectural Shingle is constructed with a thick mat made of fiberglass or organic materials, then multiple layers of asphalt and fiberglass materials are applied, the top layer covered in colored granules. Due to its multilayer construction these shingles have a 3-dimensional appearance, and shingle manufacturers can create a wider variety of color blend options that compliment your home or business.
When considering a new shingle roof prior to selling your house, architectural shingles usually provide the best return on investment. This is because even an economical architectural shingle will increase your homes curb appeal by a large amount.
Most Architectural Shingles will have a 25 to 40 year, and even lifetime, warranty because of how durable they are. They are resistant to curling and bending and able to withstand high temperatures. Their heavy weight construction also make them resistant to wind damage.
Designer Shingles
As their name suggests, Designer Shingles are asphalt shingles constructed in classic shades to create the dimensional appearance of real slate or wood shake shingles. They are manufactured with a two-piece laminated fiber glass-based construction. The thickness and heaviness of these shingles give them a rich, textured look.
Designer Shingles are costlier than architectural shingles, however, they are significantly less costly to install than real slate or shake shingles and do not require the extra bracing to support the weight of slate or shakes.
Designer Shingles look best on steep sloped roofs, where color and textural variations are better displayed. Installing Designer Shingles on a low slope roof may lead to disappointment, as the angle of viewing will not show the pattern as well.
Bill West Roofing can help you choose the right shingle for your home in Kansas City metro area and situation. We offer a variety of shingle options and are generally willing to install other brands or materials you may be interested in.
