How to Know if Repairs Make More Sense than Replacement

There’s nothing more stressful than realizing that your roof is damaged and pondering the possibility of having to pay for a full roof replacement. Replacing your roof is no cheap task; however, just because your roof is damaged doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be replaced. In some cases, basic repairs will get your roof back into good condition. The following are a few signs that your roof can be repaired and that it doesn’t need to be replaced:

  • Your roof is missing a few shingles – Shingles can be torn off during high-velocity winds, such as hurricane winds. If this happens, you can simply replace missing shingles with new ones (as long as the shingles you have on your roof are still available). If it becomes a recurring issue, however, then there may be an underlying issue with your roof and it may need replacing.
  • Some of your shingles are damaged – Shingles can be damaged by the impact of debris blown onto the roof by high winds. These shingles can be replaced individually. However, if you notice your shingles are buckling or curling, the whole roof may need replacement.
  • Isolated leaks – If your roof is having issues with leaking on a regular basis, then there’s a chance it needs to be replaced. However, isolated leaks can often be repaired. For example, some leaks may be the cause of the roof being exposed because of a missing shingle or loose or damaged flashing. In cases such as these, you can simply replace the shingle or repair or replace the flashing.
  • Your roof is new – Most roofs will last at least 20 years or so. If you have a brand new roof that has been damaged, then odds are you can probably repair it unless the damage was significant.

While these are signs that you can repair your roof and that you don’t need to necessarily replace it, if your roofer suggests that you replace your roof instead of trying to patch it up with repairs, you may want to do so. If a roof needs to be replaced, then repairs are only going to be short-term solutions and you’ll end up spending money on both repairs and replacement as a result.
